Isotretinoin sun
toxicity
· Isotretinoin is a potent human teratogen
· Usually used to treat acne
· Avoid driving or doing other tasks until pt sees how drug affects them
· Tx may lead to higher cholesterol & triglycerides
· Phototoxic—may sunburn more easily
· Possible low WBCs & can increase risk of infection
· Should not use progestin-only birth control pills
· Bowel issues may occur (inflammatory bowel disease)—diarrhea, stomach pn,
bleeding from rectum, or rectal pn
· Possible elevated glucose levels
· DON’T crush, chew, or break
· Take w/ full glass of water
· Side effects
o Dry mouth, skin, or eyes
o Dry lips
o Nose or throat irritation
o Change in how contact lenses feel in eyes
· Pt should inform physician if they’re
o able to get pregnant & not on 2 forms of birth control
o If pt is trying to become pregnant 1 month prior, during, or 1 month after
o If pt is breast-freeding, pt SHOULDN’T breast-feed
o If pt is on any -cycline, vitamin A, or St. John’s wort
o Allergy to
Tartrazine Echinacea topical
● Echinacea is an herbal supplements which can be used as treatment for the common
cold, herpes simplex infection (topical), immunostimulant, psoriasis (topical), upper
respiratory tract infections (viral), urinary tract infections, vaginal yeast infection, skin
wounds (topical), and for skin ulcers (topical). The efficiency of echinacea has not been
demonstrated in symptom reduction and prophylaxis of cold, flu, or upper respiratory
tract infection.
Side effects of echinacea include:
● abdominal pain
● allergic reactions
● altered fertility
● diarrhea
● dizziness
● redness (topical use)
● skin rash accompanying fever (topical use)
● fever
● nausea
