EX: civil rights, criminal justice reform, public education reform, government reform, economic reforms/taxes… tariff. There are other possible topics, but these are some good ideas. CURRENT EVENTS ASSIGNMENT It is very important for people to know and understand the events that are happening locally, nationally, and globally. The three current event assignments you will be completing will examine a variety of social studies topics in the news and will count as read, write, research, and present grades for the 1st Marking period. The due dates are listed below and on the class stream. I will add them to the assignments under their own category. Each current event assignment will consist of reading a news article pertaining to the chosen social studies topic and writing a one page response to it. 1) Choose an article from a news website about the assigned topic that interests you and read it. 2) At the top of your current event start with: -Your Name -The Social Studies Current Event Topic- -Title of the Article -A hyperlink to the article 3) Your response: -The response should be one page long, double spaced, using 11 or 12 font and one inch margins. -Paragraph 1- (Summary) Write a summary of the article that includes the basic who, what, where, when etc. -Paragraph 2- (Analysis) Analyze the article by responding to the following questions a. What are the positions/opinions held by the people mentioned in the article? b. How do you feel about this event/issue? c. Can you detect author bias within the article? Explain (use quotes) -Paragraph 3- (Impact) Explain why this event/topic is important. What is its impact locally, nationally, or globally? a. Why should you or I care? b. Is this event a part of a larger issue? Explain. Each paragraph should be 4-5 sentences. Paragraphs 2 and 3 should be a reasoned opinion of the issue presented in the article. These assignments are designed to get you to explore your attitudes, thoughts, and beliefs on various topics related to history/social studies. Your informed opinion should draw on your background knowledge and understanding, the information in the article, and your personal views. 4th M.P. Current Event Topic and Due Date Friday June 2nd- Progressive Reform- Choose a topic related to a major “progressive style” issue that interests you and follow the directions for a normal current event.
