CHEE2695 – Lecture 15
Heat exchangers:
- A heat exchanger is a device used to implement the exchange of heat from
one material to another.
- Heat exchangers are extremely common in industry.
- They can be direct or indirect. If fluids must be kept separate, then indirect
heat exchangers are used.
Heat exchanger types:
- Heat exchangers can use all heat exchange methods.
- The structural arrangement can be:
o Double pipe.
o Shell and tube.
o Plate type.
o Spiral.
- The flow paths can be:
o Parallel (same direction).
o Counter (opposite direction).
o Cross (perpendicular).
Heat exchanger calculations:
where ∆ T =¿ log mean temperature difference (average effective temperature
difference for the entire heat exchanger).
- For a double pipe heat exchanger:
- The area for convection is not the same for both fluids.
- Heat transfer from the hot fluid is equal to heat transfer to the cold fluid.
