Phase Behavior of pure substance
The aim of this experiment was to enable learners to understand the phase behavior of a pure
substance. The experiment was carried out using the fluid-val educational system, using Ethane
as a sample. ethane is charged to the PVT Cell and maintained in that temperature throughout the
experiment. The pressure was increased steadily and the total volume of hydrocarbon record for
each pressure increased. Using this data, a graph of pressure-total volume for each temperature
change was plotted. The plot showed a steady increase of pressure-total volume as temperature
increases. The graph of vapor pressure against temperature gave a distinct phase. The phase of
saturation temperature, saturation pressure and critical point.
Phase behavior of hydrocarbon
The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the phase behavior of hydrocarbon. Using a
mixture of methane and heptane as the sample, the mixture of methane and heptane was charged
to PVT cell and the temperature kept constant throughout the experiment. The pressure was
increased to 6500 psi and pressure decreased at intervals, on each interval of pressure decrease
the total volume of hydrocarbon was recorded. Using this data, a graph of pressure-total volume
was constructed. The result from the plot showed that the volume of the liquid decreases as the
pressure decrease and volume increase while the gas increases as volume increase and pressure
decreases. The two phases get into equilibrium if no more changes in terms of the composition of
gas and liquid, if the system is left on constant pressure and temperature.
