Policies and Politics: Chapter 3&4
Introduction
, POLICIES AND POLITICS
In the United States, health policy is based on political, ideological, and
socioeconomic environments, with major private institutions and public entities
shaping the American healthcare system. Patel and Rushefsky (2020) point out issues
faced with the American health system, such as the increasing healthcare cost,
analysis on quality and access of Medicare, Veterans Health Administration,
Medicaid, and impacts related to healthcare technology advances. This essay
discusses the Affordable healthcare Act enacted in 2010 with its provisions and the
controversies around it despite the Trump administration's attempts to repeal it and
undermine it through executive orders.
Question 3.1
Chapter 3 discusses the healthcare reforms enacted in 2010 with an insight into the
years before the passing of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The Federal Patient
Protection and Affordable Care Act was enacted on March 23, 2010, later amended by
the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act that is the Affordable Care Act.
Provisions in this Act address prevention and wellness, quality and system
performance of healthcare, access to insurance, increased expansion of healthcare and
its rising costs. It further stipulates threats, repeal attempts, Court decisions,
opposition from the White House, and contentions surrounding the passage and
execution of the Act (Patel & Rushefsky, 2020). However, the chapter provides
resolutions for the problems facing the healthcare system looking at the Republican
possible health reforms and insights about the application of the Act on the future of
the healthcare system.
