Effusion
• Otitis Media • Otitis Media with Effusion
o Middle ear, inflammation o Fluid in the middle ear
o Associated symptoms: o Associated symptoms
• URI symptoms • Otalgia without fever
• Otalgia • Fullness, tinnitus, and/or
• Fever vertigo
• Diminished hearing • Decreased hearing
• Bulging/inflamed TM • Decreased motion of TM
o Management • Popping or cracking sounds with
• Pain medications yawning or blowing nose
o Tylenol • Dull TM without bulging or
o NSAIDs inflammation
• Antibiotics (if needed) o Management
o Amoxicillin (1st) • Symptom relief
o Augmentin • If persists over 3 months, single
o Cefdinir/cefuroxime/cefpodo
course of Augmentin, if still persist
xime/ceftriaxone
referral to ENT
o Azithromycin (1st if PCN
allergy)
