Question 2
Briefly explain the difference between weak and strong sustainability.
Depending on the type of capital accumulation, sustainability may be weak or robust. Defined as
weak sustainability by notions such as human capital and natural capital, human capital (or
generated capital) includes infrastructure, labor and knowledge. The weakness of sustainability is
marked by an unreducing combined capital stock and presupposes the substitution of man-made
capital with natural capital. Low sustainability enables natural resource depletion or deterioration as
long as the rise in stocks of other types of capital is offset by this reduction (for example, by investing
royalties from depleting mineral reserves in factories).
Strong sustainability is a sustainability concept that argues that existing natural resources cannot be
reproduced or replaced. In order to continue reaping the advantages of natural capital, this should
be safeguarded, maintained and strengthened.
