New Life for Solar Energy in TamilNadu!
The disastrous nuclear incident in Japan and the power crisis in TamilNadu have
given new life for Solar Energy in TamilNadu.
The present Chief Minister has suggested that all street lights in villages should be
tested with solar energy. It is the duty of the Municipality to focus mainly on street
lights and good water supply to all the residents in the village. Many problems
were faced by TNEB in collection of electricity charges from the villages and
Municipalities.
In TamilNadu there are 12620 Municipalities, which pay Rs.8.17 crores as
electricity charges for street lights. So in a year they face an expense of Rs.99
crores.
The power charges for running motors to pump water from water tanks is
Rs.12000/month / Municipality. So in a year they have to face a burden of Rs.180
crores. Both for water and electricity charges they have to pay Rs.279 crores / year.
, Annual income of a Municipality is only Rs.1 lakh. So 70% of the income has to
be diverted to electricity charges. These tax amounts are also not easily collected.
They face lots of hardships to get it.
Hence the developmental activities of villages depend upon the Central
Government aid. Due to financial crisis, the demands of the Municipalities are
ignored by the government. Sometimes they are unable to pay the electrical
charges and hence several lakh rupees of dues are still to be paid by them. For
these dues a penalty interest of 12% has to be paid by the Municipality. The funds
allocated to Municipalities by the State government is swallowed by electricity
charges and hence other betterment activities are not undertaken at all.
This issue was brought to the notice of the present Chief Minister, who suggested
that solar energy should be used for street lights. This will lessen the financial
burden for the Municipalities. The excess power from Solar Energy can be sold to
others and it will give income to each Municipality. This solar power will aid the
industrial growth in all villages.
For the street lights to glow for 12 hours, the solar battery is to be charged for
10hrs. If shade falls on the street lights, then there will be no charging of the
