Layers of culture:
1. Artefacts of culture -> thing you notice immediately when you enter a new country eg large
windows and open curtains, tall people and hoe people dress.
2. Norms and values -> written and unwritten standards of correct, desired behavior, it takes
some time to notice them and eventually learn them. Eg stand up for an elderly person in the
bus, arrive in class on time.
3. Basic assumptions -> (norms & values) we learn very young and we are unaware of their
influence.
Intercultural communication is about bringing basic assumptions of our own culture to our
awareness and to recognize the basic assumptions of other cultures. -> in order to communicate
creatively and more effectively with people from other cultures -> achieve cultural synergy.
Culture = the collective programming/learning of the mind, which distinguishes the members of one
group or category of people from another.
