WHAT IS ACOUTICS ?
Acoustics is the science concerned with the production, control, transmission, reception, and
effects of sound. The term is derived from the Greek akoustos, meaning “heard.”
HOW SOUND IS GENERATED ?
Sound is produced when an object vibrates, creating a pressure wave. This pressure wave causes
particles in the surrounding medium (air, water, or solid) to have vibrational motion. As the
particles vibrate, they move nearby particles, transmitting the sound further through the medium.
WHAT IS NOISE?
Noise is unwanted sound considered unpleasant, loud or disruptive to hearing.
CHARACTERISTICS OF SOUND
• Pitch-Pitch is a characteristic of sound by which a correct note can be distinguished
from a grave or a flat note
• Loudness-The loudness is a sensation of how strong a sound wave is at a place. It is
always a relative term and is a dimensionless quantity. Loudness is measured
in decibel (dB).
• Quality-The word timbre also describes the term quality. As different sources
produce different sounds, the timbre helps us to distinguish between them. A sound
of good quality is pleasant to listen.
,
, What are the behaviors of sound?
When a sound wave propagates in a closed space and strikes one of the surfaces, it may
undergo one or more of the following behaviors: (1) reflection, (2) absorption, (3)
diffusion, (4) diffraction, and (5) resonance.
WHAT IS REFLECTION OF SOUND WAVES ?
The bouncing back of the sound wave on striking a surface such as a wall, metal sheet,
plywood, etc. is called the reflection of the sound wave.
