The Medical Laboratory Technology program was started in 1982, with its first class graduating in
1984. The program was started based on input from the local hospitals stating the need for such a
program to supply qualified MLTs to help staff local and area medical laboratories. The Victoria
College MLT program initiated the accreditation process in 1982 through the Committee on Allied
Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) and the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical
Laboratory Science (NAACLS). The program received initial accreditation in 1985 from CAHEA
(NAACLS). The MLT program was reaccredited by CAHEA (NAACLS) in 1987, 1990, 1995, and
2002. The MLT curriculum has MLT courses integrated with academic courses. The MLT courses
are separated into a campus phase the first year and a clinical phase during the second year.
