VERTEBRAL CURVES
The vertebral column has four normal curves, the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and
sacral curves.
• Thoracic and Sacral curves:
- These two curves are concave.
- They are called primary curves (present before
birth/during fetal development) .
- They are also called accommodation curves
(accommodate internal organs).
• Cervical and Lumbar curves:
- These two curves are convex.
- They are called secondary curves (appear after birth).
- They are also called compensation curves (shift body
weight for upright posture).
