, Though quite a number of social workers focus at resolving individual problems, some social
workers look at the bigger picture. Community social work focuses on issues that affect
larger groups of people. These issues are usually intricate, complicated and complex.
Occasionally, the challenges might be politically difficult, but community social work as a
process ensures that community members revitalize their own communities. The purpose is to
bring about required social change through the specific utilisation of community
development, social planning, community education, social marketing, and social action as
practice models (Weyers 2011). Communities are the background for community social work
and community social work acknowledges the multifariousness of communities. So,
comprehending different standpoints and dimensions of community is noteworthy for
effective community social work practice. The aim of this essay is to .summarise the case
study according to the five phases of the community work process, discuss the community
work practice model applicable to the case study, the theory/approach/perspective applicable
to the case study, the p the application, or lack thereof, of the four features of community
development in the case study, principles of participation, empowerment and ownership and
apply them to the case study and the application, or lack thereof, of the four outcomes of
community development in the case study.

PHASE 1: CONTACT-MAKING
In this case study contact-making was through outings into the local communities, the school,
teachers training college as well as the drop-in centre for street children where the youth from
the community visit. Contact-making involves actions such as meeting and communicating
with different individuals, groups and organisations, getting to know them, making
observations and entering into relationships. This initial phase of the community work
process may seem unproductive, yet engagement with the people lays the foundation for the
process and opens the way for later participation and action, and at this stage the children
lacked motivation and did not want to participate. It may be cumbersome for the community
worker but because it is important in the community work process, it should not be neglected
or rushed. It should be performed with great sensitivity because the entry of the worker will
