words, are limited in number. 2 Marks
Functional words are limited in number because they serve as connectors or
helpers in a sentence rather than carrying significant meaning themselves. Content
words, on the other hand, carry most of the meaning in a sentence, such as nouns,
verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Since the number of possible grammatical functions
in a sentence is limited, the number of functional words needed to perform those
functions is also limited.
2 Name three functions of language that are connected with the creative
feature of human language. 3 Marks
Metaphor: the use of words or phrases in a way that is not literal but suggests a
resemblance between two different things.
Humor: the use of language to create amusement or laughter through the use of
irony, sarcasm, puns, and other linguistic devices.
Poetry: the use of language to create a form of art that evokes emotional responses
from readers through the use of imagery, sound, and rhythm
3 Creativity as a feature of human language is also referred to as productivity
or openness. List four words that have been created to describe interaction on
social media because of this feature of language. 4 Marks
Hashtag: a word or phrase preceded by a pound sign (#) used to identify messages
on a specific topic.
