, - PHARMACOLOGY QUESTIONS
PREDNISONE – CORTICOSTEROID
- CAN INDUCE OSTEOPOROSIS: therefore the client should schedule a bone density test
to establish a baseline evaluation.
- NOTIFY PCP of dark stools, this is a sign of GI bleeding
- Never stop this medication abruptly
FERROUS SULFATE ELIXIR
- Safe to take during pregnancy
- Dark-colored stools is an expected finding
- Encourage intake of fiber and fluids
- Rinse mouth after taking this medication (Instruct the client to use a straw to drink this
medication and rinse the mouth immediately) D/T teeth staining.
EPOETIN ALFA – Self-Administration
- 45 degree angle when given injection (SUBCUTANEOUS ROUTE)
- Never freeze the medication and store at (35.6-46.4 F)
- NEVER shake the vial
RIFAMPIN
- REPORT a headache, fever, or muscle aches IMMEDIATELY
- Decreases effectiveness of oral contraceptives!!!, therefore, the nurse should instruct
the client to use SECONDARY METHOD TO PREVENT PREGNANCY
- Once treatment begins, the client will return to the clinic for sputum culture to
monitor effectiveness of the treatment
- Take this medication ONCE DAILY & AVOID SKIPPING OR TAKING DOUBLE DOSES IF A
DOSE IS MISSED
BETAXOLOL – BETA BLOCKER – used to treat glaucoma
- SYSTEMIC EFFECTS bradycardia
- Adverse effects HYPOTENSION
PHENYTOIN
- Gingival hyperplasia is a common adverse effect of the medication. Massaging the gums
will help minimize this effect.
ATORVASTATIN
- Report MUSCLE PAIN or TENDERNESS to the provider.
, MECLIZINE (antihistamine)
- SEDATION is an adverse effect.
- Dry mouth (suck on sugar-free candy or chew gum)
ENOXAPARIN (anticoagulant)
- Administer by SUBCUTAENOUS INJECTION
- Should be given at different sites with each injection
- DO NOT aspirate after inserting the needle or massage the site after.
WARFARIN
- Brush teeth gently with a soft-bristle toothbrush or tooth sponge. AVOID FLOSSING
- AVOID NSAIDS, including aspirin and ibuprofen d/t risk of bleeding
- Encourage use of an electric razor, not a safety razor
- If the client MISSES A DOSE OF THE MEDICATION, they can take it later the same day
but should not double the dose the next day.
CAPTOPRIL – ACE INHIBITOR
- AVOID Ibuprofen or any other NSAIDS can reduce the antihypertensive effects of this
medication.
THEOPHYLLINE – xanthines (used for long-term control of chronic asthma)
- AVOID CAFFEINE AS this intensifies adverse effects of the medication such as
TACHYCARDIA; caffeine can also cause THEO levels to RISE
- DO NOT DOUBLE DOSE
- MEDICATION CAN CAUSE TACHYCARDIA HOLD IF >100BPM
METHAMPHETAMINE (expected findings)
- Dilated pupils
- Increased energy and hypervigilance
MONTELUKAST – leukotriene modifier
- Taken on a regular basis for the treatment of asthma ONCE A DAY & not on an “as-
needed” basis
- TAKEN ONCE A DAY FOR MAINTENANCE AT BEDTIME
- LONG-TERM MAINTENANCE (take it every day)
- Not used as a rescue medication
