WHAT IS THE FRAX CALCULATOR ?
Fracture Risk Assessment Tool – developed by the WHO to provide a prediction tool for assessing an
individual’s risk of fracture in order to provide general clinical guidance for treatment decisions.
The fracture risk assessment (FRAX) score predicts the 10-year probability of a major osteoporotic (hip,
spine, forearm, or humerus) or hip fracture. The score accounts for significant risk factors for bone loss
and fracture. If the FRAX score is above certain thresholds (>20% probability of major osteoporotic
fracture ; 3% probability of hip fracture), drug therapy should be recommended.
Score is based on risk factors; bone mineral density can be included as well
