, INTRODUCTION
• Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by
mycobacterium leprae .It mainly affects the skin and
peripheral Nerves. It has long incubation period of
generally 5-7 years.
• Eventually a breakthrough was achieved in 1981,when
WHO recommended the use of combined
chemotherapeutic regimens for the treatment of
leprosy .Based on the recommendations of the working
group ,Government of india switched over from NLCP to”
NATIONAL LEPROSY ERADICATION PROGRAMME”
during 1983 with the goal of to eradicate leprosy from
India by 2000AD.

• National Leprosy eradication Programme was
introduced in 1983 ,with the goal to eradicate
leprosy from India by 2000AD by introducing
multi drug therapy as the mainstay of the
eradication process.
