Amniotic fluid


• Fluid that distends the amniotic sac during pregnancy
• Formed from:
– Transudation across – fetal membranes, fetal skin, umbilical cord
– Fetal urine

• Very clear in earlier gestation, becomes turbid towards term due to vernix
caseosa, may contain lanugo

Functions


• During pregnancy
– Acts as a shock absorber – protects fetus
– Maintains an even temperature around fetus
– Distends amniotic sac – growth, movements
– Contributes to water supply of the fetus

• During labor
– Hydrostatic wedge that helps dilate the cervix
– Prevents marked interference with placental circulation
– Flushes birth canal – protects fetus from ascending infection
