• Modernization theory
Modernization theory is a linear theory of development that argues that all societies
progress through a series of stages, from traditional to modern. The theory emphasizes
the importance of economic development, industrialization, and education in achieving
modernization.
One of the main criticisms of modernization theory is that it is too simplistic. The theory
does not take into account the different historical and cultural contexts of different
societies. Additionally, the theory has been criticized for being ethnocentric, as it assumes
that Western values and institutions are superior to those of other cultures.
• Dependency theory
Dependency theory is a more critical theory of development that argues that the
development of some countries is dependent on the underdevelopment of others. The
theory argues that the global economic system is structured in a way that benefits
developed countries at the expense of developing countries.
One of the main strengths of dependency theory is that it highlights the role of global
