STORY – AMRITA PRITAM
Amrita Pritam was one of the foremost women writers in modern India.
Amrita wrote in Punjabi and Hindi about those courageous women who
had lived life as per their wishes. She has written over 100 books.
Her experiences during partition inspired her to write the novel ‘Pinjar’.
She showed helplessness being suffered by women at that time in this
novel. Her books have been translated into several Indian and foreign
languages.
Amrita stopped believing in God after her mother’s demise. At that time,
she was 11 years old. Her first book of poems ‘Amrit Lehran’ was
published in 1936 at the age of 16.
She married one of her admirers’ son Pritam Singh at the age of 16.
However, they could never feel a deeper connection as partners.
Amrita found peace in companionship of renowned artist and writer
Imroz. She lived with him till her demise.
She was born as Amrita Kaur in Gujranwala, Punjab (now in Pakistan).
She was the only child of Kartar Singh and Raj Bibi. Her father was a
school teacher and a poet. She got inspiration from her father’s writings.
She was the first woman to receive Sahitya Akademi Award. She was
the first Punjabi woman to be honoured with Padma Shri. She has
received the Jnanpith Award, India’s highest literary award, in 1981.
