ENG1501 The given extract is emotionally taxing with the effect of trauma on the narrator to move on. We are going to explore the depth of internal conflict of the narrator in the book called “Small Things”, by N. Mohlele. The book “Small Things”, We learn that the narrator was raised in the Catholic church as an orphan, later kicked out from church as they claim that he was a devil. He then stayed in Sophia town with bra Todd. In this novel, the narrator takes us through his love life with two women Desiree and Mercedes. He starts by taking us in a journey with her high school lover desiree then Mercedes the comforter. The novel is well written of homeless artist. The main narrator has been searching for true love before and after impressment. The theme that I will take you through its love. The novel theme is about love and the narrator was a lover, artist, and a Musician. From the begging of the novel we here the main narrator expresses his love for Desiree. The narrator was all about her former classmate. The narrator indeed loved her so much. We find this passage when the narrator trying to express the love he has. (N. Mohlele ,2013:10). “I, to this day, fall hopelessly in love whenever I see postmen carrying mailbags. My heart leaps at bright-red post boxes in pictures. They remind me of Desiree – the postmaster’s daughter.” His heart was longing for love from Desiree. The question you can ask yourself is did Desiree loves him back the way he wanted? No, she never was unclear about where she is stand and the narrator was unclear about where she stands as he was in love with her.
