, Introduction
Myrthe Renshof
We are making this paper of course because of school. But I have also a big interest in
Scottish history, that is also why I made the first subquestion. I came to the idea of
doing a research paper about the topic when I was watching the netflix show Outlander.
This was around the time we had to pick a subject for our research paper. The show
made me choose English and History. It is about an English woman in the 1940’s who
touches a very special stone and goes back in time about 200 years. She meets a man
and falls in love with him. This man will become one of the leaders of the jacobite army.
Which is an important part of Scottish history. I like the show a lot. One of the last
episodes of the fourth season is about how they lose a fight and that is when the
jacobite army goes down. I am very interested in history and when I got English as my
subject for my research paper I wanted to do it about Outlander and the history and
independence of Scotland. I will write a little piece about the show Outlander in our
research paper. This is however in no way, shape or form a contribution to the
answering of our research question.

When school gave us this assignment I did not really have an idea of what I wanted to
write about, but when Myrthe suggested this topic I quite liked the idea. I thought it was
an interesting topic, I did not know much about it yet. I quite like Scotland, I think it is
really beautiful and it has a quite rich history. Although this was not really about the
history of Scotland I still found it interesting. It is an active topic and I would like to see
how this plays out and if Scotland will become independent or not.
