Estrogen- female hormone, around 8 yrs. Old; FSH travels through the bloodstream to the ovaries, causing the ovaries to produce this hormone. a. Purpose- to stimulate the ovaries to start the development of secondarysex characteristics, and initiates the menstrual cycle. b. Secondary Sex Characteristics- Physical and emotional changes that occur with puberty. Vulva: mons veneris, labia majora, labia minora, clitoris vagina. b. Vagina- birth canal, connects the uterus to the outside of the body, Hymen- a thin membrane that stretches across the opening of the c. Ovaries- female reproductive glands that produces ova and estrogen. Afemale is born with approx. 200,000-400,000 immature ova. Approx. only 375 will be released. d. Fallopian Tubes: a four inch long tube that connects the ovary to theuterus. e. Uterus: a muscular organ that receives and supports the fertilized egg during pregnancy and contracts upon birth to help with delivery. f. Cervix: lowest part of the uterus, which connects the vagina to theuterus. 4. Menstrual Cycle: a monthly series of changes that involve ovulation and menstruation. a. Ovulation: the release of a mature ovum form one of the two ovaries. b. Menstruation: a part of the cycle in which the unfertilized egg and thelining of the uterus leave the body in a menstrual flow. A new mature ova is in the ovary. 2.) Days 6-12- uterine lining begins to thicken, uterus prepares for ovulation. 3.) Days 13-14- ova bursts from the ovary- ovulation 4.) Days 15-20- The ova (corpus luteum) secretes a hormone, progesterone, that changes the lining of the uterus. It will continue to release progesterone if the ova is fertilized throughout pregnancy. 5.) Days 21-28- the ova (corpus luteum) disintegrates if not fertilized. No more progesterone is secreted.
