Roman Gods
- Roman religion (like current religions) applied to family life, rites of passage, festivals.
- Roman religion was about how to behave towards the gods – and to prosper from the gods’ favour as a
result.
- Practical
- Romans honoured gods in return for practically beneficial favour: health, wealth, fertility, victory, success,
etc.
- Honour was given by offering things of value – the sacrifice of animals (which were currency before money
was invented.
- Liber was an early god of fertility, growth and so vines and wine - name means “free”, became associated
with Bacchus.
- Janus – particularly Roman god of gates and doorways, and so metaphorically, all houses/dwellings and
beginnings/endings - two faces looking forward and back.
