Interstitial Cystitis (IC) and Bladder Pain Syndrome
(BPS):
Definition:
Interstitial Cystitis (IC), also known as Bladder Pain Syndrome (BPS), is
a chronic condition characterized by recurring discomfort or pain in
the bladder and surrounding pelvic region. It's a diagnosis of exclusion,
meaning that other potential causes for the symptoms must be ruled
out before diagnosing IC/BPS.
Symptoms:
Frequent, urgent, and painful urination (dysuria).
Pelvic pain and discomfort that can range from mild to severe.
Bladder pressure or a feeling of fullness even when the bladder is
not full.
Pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia).
Disrupted sleep due to frequent nighttime urination (nocturia).
Fluctuation in symptoms over time.
Diagnosis:
There's no single definitive test for IC/BPS; diagnosis is based on
clinical presentation, symptom history, and exclusion of other
conditions.
Various diagnostic tests might be used to rule out other potential
causes of symptoms, including urinary tract infections, bladder cancer,
and other inflammatory conditions.
