VOLCANOES
GRADE-8 Q3
Definition:
-Volcanoes can look mountains
-A volcano is an opening in the Earts crust that allows
Magma, hot ash and gases to escape, volcanoes can look like
Mountains or small hills, depending on what type they are.
There are 2 classification of Volcanoes
ACTIVE VOLCANOES- are those that have a record of eruption within the last 600 years
of those that erupted 10,000 years ago based on analyses of their materials.
INACTIVE VOLCANOES- on the other hand, these volcanoes have not erupted for the last 10,000 years
And their physical form is being changed by agents of weathering and erosion through formation of deepl
long gullies.
3 Shape Types of Volcanoes
1. CINDER CONE- more technically known as scoria cones, scoria are irregularly
Shapes, highly vesicular fragments of lava that are erupted into the air and they are typically solid when they
land. It is a bowl shaped crater and they only grow to abotut a thousand feet, (the size of a hill).
2. COMPOSITE VOLCANO – composite volcano or strato volcano are relatively steep sides and
Are more cone shape than shield volcanoes. They are from viscous, sticky lava that does not flow easily. The lava
builds up around the vent forming a volcano with steep sides.
3. SHIEL VOLCANOES- shield volcanoes are the largest volcanoes on earth, they do not form soaring mountains with
conical peaks like composite volcanoes. Instead, they are broad volcanoes with gentle slopes and are shape
somewhat like a warrior shield lying flat on the earth.
