AERIAL PROPELLER
The drawing of the aerial propeller was made around the year 1486 by Leonardo da Vinci. This
manuscript is one of a series of sketches of machines designed for mechanical flight. It is a
propeller made of wire, beading and linen fabric. The machine was to be operated by four men,
one for each bar or handle. Standing on the central platform, the men would push the bars and
thus spin the propeller. It seems that this design was inspired by a very popular toy in Leonardo's
time. It is a windmill, a small propeller with a shaft and a rope wrapped around the shaft; by
rapidly unwinding the rope, the propeller is spun and the pinwheel rises.
