Applying Research Skills
Among one of the most significant issues in modern healthcare is racial and ethnic disparities.
This topic is interesting because, as health care professionals, it is our sworn duty to listen to
patient needs and concerns within the healthcare system. Health care professionals are held to a
code of ethics and standards that patients trust to ensure that we, as health care professionals, are
providing the care they need. In twelve years of nursing, the lack of due diligence regarding
racial or ethnic disparities in county jails, and the state prison system due to lack of funding, or
lack of attention from county professionals, is morally daunting
Assessing Credibility and Relevance of Information Sources
I have selected peer-reviewed journals by authors who are credible in the field of research for
health care. These journals were published within the past six years. All selected journals contain
keywords, facts, and phrases from my topic of research, and are all related in that they give
expert analysis of Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care in county jails and state prisons.
Identifying Academic Peer-Reviewed Journal Articles
Using Cappella University online search engine, "summons' 'gave me access to peer-
reviewed journal articles in databases such as pro-quest. I used the keywords "Racial health care
in prisons" and was able to find a substantial amount of research regarding healthcare in prisons.
I limited my search to peer-reviewed, scholarly journals published within the past six years.
