The Institute of Medicine reviews various opportunities that passage of the Patient Protection
and Affordable Care Act have presented for nurses (Scroczynski and Dunphy, 2012). Nurse
Practitioners will continue to work towards successfully redesigning the health care system and it
is exciting to think that I could one day be part of such change. Of course one must go through
the credentialing process, which involves multiple steps. While watching a review of the
credentialing process involved for nurse practitioners, I quickly realized that it necessitates a
multifaceted approach. Graduates must provide proof of not only their education, but also their
state licensure, certification from the AANP or ANCC, collaborative practice agreement,
prescriptive authority verification, and even letters of recommendation.
,My concerns vary from having to complete a vast amount of paperwork to making sure that I do
not hurt my nursing license in the mean time, negatively affecting my future credentialing
process. I hope that even though we are reviewing and preparing for whats ahead, I will still have
a practice manager kind enough to help me acquire the appropriate paperwork when applying for
my first job as an FNP (MidlevelU, 2014). I also find it hard to believe that a graduate nurse
practitioner could start work immediately even after submitting the appropriate paperwork. I
wonder just how long it usually takes after submission of paperwork to start practicing.
I believe that obtaining certification from the ANCC or AANP will take the most work and
preparation. It is reassuring to find review books such as the Gerontology Nurse Practitioner
Certification Intensive Review: Fast Facts and Practice Questions that help prepare students to
take such certification exams (Codina, 2014).

The Nurse Practitioner credentialing process is quite extensive. This entails many steps that
enables us to practice medicine in the communities in which we serve. If you are an Oklahoma
student it looks like there are many steps to ensure that you arrive at your licensure successfully.
In the great state of Oklahoma you can begin to apply for your AANP 6 months prior to
graduation. This is where you will need to make a decision of which test you want to take and to
be one step closer to licensure. This test may cost you in the range of $315-$240 (student 55).

for your national provider number NOW (NPI)?. This is a national data base for providers. You
can apply as an RN using the RN taxonomy. Leave practice location and other non-related
items blank. Starting the initial process is quite lengthy. It is very instant and once you become
licensed, changing your taxonomy to NP is instant and you can add all of the practice
information then if you know it. Then you must apply for state APRN. You can start the online
process around the same time you start your certification application. This 1process is 100%
online. Then you must apply for your state prescriptive authority. You can start the online
process around the same time you start your certification application and APRN application and
APRN application, it looks like it is about 90% online. This entails a print out that must have
your supervising physicians signature. So this is just a simple idea of what it takes for the
credentialing process to be complete.
You must also obtain your DEA licensure.

The proof our education such as our BSN degrees and our ACLS and BLS is something that we
certainly start trying to get right now.
I have a friend that has just graduated in 2016 and has just started practicing as an FNP one
month ago. The process is very tedious and it must be done to perfection. This is what worries
me, is that we are in an on line class and It takes time to get a reply from a professor to get an
answer and it takes time to get forms filled out and like it said about the finger prints, if they are
lost or incorrect, you must repeat this whole process. It is certainly funny how each one of us
can read the assignment just a little bit differently, just as a licensure, reading the instructions,
interpretation can be different for each of us.

I have not personally researched what the state of Pennsylvania allows. But, it is
wonderful that you can start this lengthy process even before you graduate. This is
something I did not even think about, yet makes sense. I could compare it to the time
when I planned on taking boards and scheduled everything far in advance prior to my
tentative graduation date.
I cannot agree with you more pertaining to the strict adherence to rules when working
through this process. I realize that we cannot interpret anything differently when it comes
to our licensure and other certification and proof of education as you have so clearly
mentioned! Great overview!

In reading the many posts regarding beginning a career as a nurse practitioner, this writer
believes there are some basic do’s and don’ts that one should know. Having the knowledge of
what to expect, what to ask for, and what is expected of the novice nurse practitioner is a
valuable asset. The article by Demonbreun, K. A. (2016) lists quite a few pieces of information
that will keep you focused on your skills, knowledge, and abilities. Understanding your worth is
essential to ‘selling” yourself as a professional. This writer also found the list to be uplifting.
Included on the first page is a series of questions and answers from other nurse practitioners and
students that were enlightening as well.
