,AVIAN INFLUENZA (AI)
◼ Synonyms: Fowl plague, Birdu Flu, Brownswick Disease,
Fowl Disease, HPAI, Type A Influenza etc.
◼ Infection of birds by virulent Type A Virus of
Orthomyxoviridae family is called as Avian Influenza
◼ OIE defines avian influenza as: HPNAI and LPNAI
◼ Orthomyxoviridae Family: Genus Influenza A Virus
◼ The term “influenza” originally referred to epidemics of
acute, rapidly spreading catarrhal fevers of humans caused
by viruses in the family Orthomyxoviridae
,Morphology of Virus
◼ Spherical to pleomorphic in shape (120 nm) diameter. Also
filamentous with several hundred nm diameter
◼ Two types of surface glycoproteins
◼ Rod Shaped trimers of Hemagglutinin
◼ Mushroom shaped tetramers of Neuraminidase
◼ Virus genome composed of 8 segments of single stranded
negative sense RNA
◼ Genome composed of eight structural proteins , NA, HA,
Nucleoprotein (NP), M1, M2, PB1, PB2, NS2 and
nonstructural protein NS1
