,Introduction and History
◼ Chicken Infectious Anemia is a disease of young chicks
characterized by aplastic anemia, generalized lymphoid,
subcutaneous & intramuscular hemorrhages &
immunosupression
◼ Synonyms include Blue wing disease, Hemorrhagic
syndrome , Anemia Dermatitis, paravo like infection
◼ Economic losses due to CAV infection are reported up to
18% loss in net income
◼ Virus first reported as Chicken Anemia Agent in 1979 in
Japan by Yuasa
◼ Major breakthrough takes place in 1983 when Yuasa
propagted the virus in chciken lymphoblastoid cell line
,INTRODUCTION --------------
◼ CAV can be propagated in day-old MDA free chicks
and embryonated chicken eggs and cell lines
◼ Anemia virus induced Immuno-suppression, gained
considerable economic importance around the
poultry globe in recent years
◼ Breeder hens vaccinated against CIA pass maternal
antibodies (MDA) to their progeny, which may give
them protection from the field virus during first 3-4
weeks of life.
, Etiology
◼ CIAV is an emerging poultry pathogen belonging to genus
gyrovirus and family circoviriade
◼ This is a single strand negative sense circular DNA Virus
with diameter of 25 nm
◼ Virus particles are non enveloped and environmentally very
resistant . It requires 10 % formalin at 37 Centigrade
◼ Two types of particles type I exhibit 3 fold rotational
symmetry and type II exhibit 5 fold rotational symmetry with
10 hollows also called cog wheel shape
◼ Three proteins VP1(structural protein) and VP2, VP3 are non
structural proteins. VP3 is required for virus replication
◼ Two serotypes CIAV and CIAV 7
