, Definition and occurrence
Coccidiosis is common protozoal disease of poultry &
many other birds characterized by diarrhea and
enteritis.
Coccidiosis in poultry affects the intestinal tract, except
for renal coccidiosis in geese.
Coccidiosis is found in all segments of the poultry
industry and has a world-wide distribution.
Subclinical disease has been recognized as having
important impact on FCR in commercial meat-bird
production & negative impacts on growth in layer
pullets and breeders.
, Etiology
In chicken and turkeys caused by protozoal species of
Eimeria. Many species in chicken and turkeys.
Coccidia are host specific therefore do not pass among
different avian species.
Complex life cycle and infection occur by fecal-oral
route.
Ingestion of contaminated feed, water, litter and soil
result in active infection.
Ingestion of sporulated coccidial occyst result in release
of sporozoites and initiation of asexual and sexual
cycles which ultimately resulted in development of
thousands of new oocysts in intestine .
