Overall grade: Pass on resubmission
General comments: Good job Olga. I can now see how your pronunciation activity would work
with the inclusion of the instructions page. You have also included a good rationale for your first
problem and supported your grammar activity with the grammar page from the book. This is now a
passing assignment.
, Part 1 Learner’s profile
Background and Learning Experience:
Vanessa is an intermediate learner. She is a biochemist.
She considers herself as a highly organized person who plans
her activities in advance and enjoys following schedules.
Vanessa's first language is Chilean Spanish.
Vanessa has been learning English since she was five with
her aunt, an English teacher. She continued learning through
music and lyrics. At school, Vanessa had an unsatisfactory
experience with an English teacher who used outdated teaching
methods, but she enjoyed studying at the British Institute,
where the teacher's inductive approach was more engaging. As
Jeremy Harmer explains, “If we can get students engaged in a
task, there is a much better chance that they will listen with
commitment and concentration.”1 Vanessa loves learning
English but feels uncertain about how to progress to the next
level.
Reasons and Motivation for Learning English:
Vanessa has both extrinsic and intrinsic motivations for
learning English. English proficiency can provide her with career
opportunities and is essential for studying abroad. Vanessa
frequently reads scientific articles in her field, which are mainly
in English. She aims to achieve a C1 level of English proficiency,
as her job requires an English certification. She wants to apply
for a permanent position, and the English language certification
will make her a more competitive candidate.
Additionally, Vanessa is intrinsically motivated to learn
English because of her hobby, binding notebooks. She reads
about stitching, sewing, and types of threads and needles to
improve her proficiency. However, most of the resources are in
English, which requires her to expand her vocabulary.
Preferred Learning Style and Beneficial Activities:
Vanessa is a kinesthetic and visual learner who likes
learning through practical tasks and visual aids. As David
Riddell notes, "being a student" is a complicated existence, and
teachers should be aware of their students' different learning
attitudes2. Vanessa enjoys fun interactions, such as role-plays,
peer discussions, and real-life situations, which keep her
engaged and motivated. For example, she appreciates tasks
that involve discussing ideas with classmates. As a visual
