Hi everyone, my name is Angela Kim and I am the ambassador for Women in AI in
Australia. I am here to introduce you to Artificial Intelligence 101.
In this collaboration between AI for EU and Women in AI, we will be covering
various topics related to AI over the next 10 weeks. We will discuss what AI is,
data science, AI for business, responsible ethical AI, how to use GitHub, and
Python coding for AI.
What is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) enables machines to learn from experience, adapt to
new inputs, and perform tasks that are typically performed by humans. AI uses
technologies to train computers to accomplish specific tasks by processing large
amounts of data and recognizing patterns. AI is more about the process and
capability for superpowered thinking and data analysis than any particular format
or function. AI is not intended to replace humans, but rather to enhance human
capabilities and contributions, making it a valuable asset for businesses.
Types of AI
When discussing different types of AI, we usually refer to weak AI and strong AI.
Weak AI, also known as narrow AI, is focused on performing specific tasks. Examples
of weak AI include Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa, IBM Watson, and autonomous
vehicles. On the other hand, strong AI refers to artificial general intelligence or
artificial superintelligence. Strong AI is a theoretical form of AI where machines
have intelligence equal to humans and possess self-aware consciousness. While
strong AI is still theoretical, researchers are exploring its development.
Why is Artificial Intelligence Important?
Artificial Intelligence is important because it provides insights into operations
that may not have been previously known. AI can perform tasks better than humans,
especially in repetitive and detail-oriented tasks. AI tools can complete jobs
quickly and with fewer errors, leading to increased efficiency and new business
opportunities for enterprises. Many successful enterprises have already used AI to
improve their operations and gain a competitive advantage.
Examples of AI Technology
AI is incorporated into various types of technology. Here are six examples:
Automation: Automation tools paired with AI technologies can expand the volume and
types of tasks performed. Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is an example of
automation software that automates repetitive data processing tasks.
Machine Learning: This is the science of getting a computer to act without
programming. Deep learning, a subset of machine learning, automates predictive
analysis analytics.
Machine Vision: This technology gives machines the ability to see and analyze
visual information. It is used in applications such as signature identification and
medical image analysis.
Natural Language Processing (NLP): NLP involves the processing of human language by
a computer program. It is used in tasks like spam detection, text translation,
