1.How would functionalist sociologists analyze the persistence of prostitution in society?
Explain using the ideas from the video, book and class discussion.
Ans: Prostitution can be defined as a provision of sexual servitude. In Bangladesh there are more
than 20 brothels and the largest one is at Daulatdia and more than 1500 women works here day
and night. This kind of societies are shunned by other societies for good reasons but this forces
them to create their own society structure, social norms and values but this kind of societies also
serve the greater society in many ways which can be analyzed from Durkheim’s functionalist
paradigm theory.
From the three theoretical paradigms of sociologists Durkheim suggests the functionalist
approach for study. Basically, according to functionalism society is a system of interconnected
elements that works together in harmony maintain a state of balance and social equilibrium for
the whole society. This theory mainly emphasis on maintaining society’s stability through its
interconnecting structures. From the functionalist perspective, if an does not benefit the society it
cannot exist. So, prostitution has been existing for a few centuries because it does somehow
serve the society. Basically, prostitution has a manifest function, it can be viewed as a job
because a prostitute earns living for her and her family exchanged for sexual services. Also, it
has a latent function which can be providing a sexual outlet for those who are unable to compete
in the marriage market, such as those who are physically or intellectually challenged.
At the end, from Durkheim’s theory we can see that prostitution is an interconnected structure of
a society which also contributes for the stability in some ways.
2. How would conflict sociologists analyze the presence of prostitution in society? Explain
using the ideas from the video, book and class discussion.
Ans: Karl Marx’s conflict theory basically talks about how the society is in a state of perpetual
conflict because of competition for limited resources. Mainly this theory suggests that there is
competition regardless age, gender, class is everywhere in a functioning society for the uneven
distribution of money. This can be related to prostitution as well.
