Circumcision:
Circumcision Care:
Pre-procedure:
o Informed Consent necessary before procedure is performed
o Infant is stable
o Infant has received Vitamin K injection to prevent excessive bleeding
Post-procedure:
o Observe bleeding during each diaper change
o Apply petroleum jelly after each diaper change for the 1st 4-7 days
Unless Plastibell was used
o Keep site clean by squeezing warm water from a clean washcloth over the penis to cleanse
o Fasten diaper loosely to prevent rubbing or pressure on incision site
o Yellow crust or scab should form over the incision site
Normal
Do not remove
Will fall off within 7-10 days
If Plastibell was used it will fall off within 7-10 days
If falls off sooner or later notify Physician
o Heals in approximately 10 days
Pain Care:
Pre-surgery:
o EMLA (Eutectic Mixture of Local Anesthetics) cream
, o Dorsal Penile Nerve Block
Post-surgery:
o Acetaminophen
o Pacifiers
o Oral Sucrose
o Decreased lights, soothing music, and talking softy to infant
Non-circumcision Care:
Wash infant’s penis daily and during diaper changes
Do not retract the foreskin because it does not separate till 3-6 years of age
Gently pull back foreskin to see how much separation has occurred, Never Force
Teach child to take care of his penis by retracting foreskin and washing underneath it
Safe sleeping:
Nothing in the bed with the baby
No bumpers in the crib
Crying, prevention of AHT (shaken baby):

Require higher Intake of Calcium and Iron
Substance abuse:
Domestic violence:
