Chandrayaan 2 Exploration Mission
1. Indian Lunar Mission: Chandrayaan 2 is India'ssecond lunar
exploration mission, following the success of Chandrayaan 1. It
aimed to further explore the Moon's surface and study its
composition.
2. Orbiter, Lander, and Rover: The mission consisted of three
components -the orbiter, lander named Vikram, and rover named
Pragyan. The orbiter was designed to study the Moon from orbit,
while the lander and rover were meant to explore the lunar
surface.
3. Launch: Chandrayaan 2 was launched on July 22, 2019, using
the GSLV Mk l-M1 launch vehicle from the Satish Dhawan Space
Centre. The launch aimed to put the spacecraft into a lunar
transfer trajectory.
4. Landing Attempt: Vikram lander carried the Pragyan rover and
was set to make a soft landing near the Moon's south pole.
However, during the descent, communication was lost, and the
lander crash-landed on the Moon's surface on September 6,
2019.
5. Orbiter's Success: Despite the lander's setback, the
Chandrayaan 2 orbiter successfully entered lunar orbit. It
continues to function and send back valuable data about the
Moon's surface, minerals, and exosphere.
