“Letter from Birmingham Jail” / “Standing Rock” PART ONE: Before reading Dr. King’s "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" and an article about a modern social justice movement, think about how social action can affect our American national government. Use the graphic below to explore these ideas. How might social movements affect… Examples 1. PUBLIC OPINION: Social Movements can affect public opinion about a topic because when more and more people begin to care about a topic, politicians no longer can ignore it and must take a decision on it. If it is a topic that many people care about, politicians know that if they don’t act as the public wants them to, then they will not be reelected. 2. LEGISLATIVE POLICY: If the public cares very much about a topic, politicians (especially delegate congressmen) must act as the public wants, or else they will not be reelected. 3. SUPREME COURT: If it is a social movement that affects a lot of people, then the Supreme Court is probably going to hear the case. Questions: 1) Source Analysis Describe Dr. King’s purpose in writing this paragraph. What is he attempting to explain to his audience? I think he is trying to list the pain and the insults that the Black community had gone through. They are trying to change things, but the cruel politicians are stopping them at every turn. 2) Check Your Understanding Write the promise that King explains the merchants broke which may have prevented the direct action he’s describing. The promise that the merchants made at the negotiating sessions was that they were going to remove the slurs from their stores, and had they done that, King would not have taken further action. 3) Source Analysis: What was the direct action seeking to get the merchants to do? Negotiating sessions with the merchants was the direct action that King is referring to. He wanted to convince them to remove the racial slurs on their stores. 4) Source Analysis Write the claim Dr. King supports using the evidence of the broken promise by the merchants. On the bas
