“The very act of brainstorming over a cup of tea, or scrambling to finish duties 30 minute
earlier to get to a team meeting establishes a unique bond among team members”- Irani
CEO-TISCO.
Birth of a Concept:
Brainstorming was the brainchild of Alex F. Osborn, cofounder of the giant advertising agency
Batten, Barton, Durstine and Osborn and had its beginning in the early 1930’s. But it was not
until 1953, with the publication of Osborn’s Applied Imagination, referred to by the scoffers as
‘the bible of brainstorming’ that the virtues of the technique began to echo through management
paneled halls.
Whether by design or accident brainstorming had all the cardinal virtues an idea requires to be
clutched to the managerial bosom.
An Attractive Handle:
The word Brainstorming is provocative, graphic and memorable.
1) Step by Step Rules:
The technique can be described in a few simple sentences.
2) Something for the Group:
Because it is a technique for the many rather than for the individual,
brainstorming promises multiple results, a jackpot dear to the practicality of its
potential users.
3) A Valuable End Result:
, The value of ideas in a developing economy is self evident. There are some
words and phrases in management’s vocabulary which, like motherhood and
virtue in the politician’s are unassailable.
Along with profits and costs reduction, the words creativity and Ideas obviously represent
something of undesirable value to management.
Since brainstorming scores 100% when tested against these four criteria, your won’t be
surprised to learn, that, according to the blurb on the dust jacket of applied imagination,
brainstorming became a method of ideation which recently has been widely employed in
business and government, in the armed services and in other areas.
Until much dust-jacket copy, that statement was no exaggeration.
Brainstorming promised to do for ideas what spindle top did for oil.
Organization after organization went all out for the idea gusher represented by the Osborn
approach. Looking back, it’s not hard to understand why.
As American enterprise became increasingly technical in character, company after company
began a desperate search for new ideas to hasten the development of products, processes and
procedures.
What a God-send to come at last upon a simple and easy method.
No need any longer to probe the complexities of the psyche, to look into the causes of creativity.
Brain storming was the answer rules of the game:
The proponents of brainstorming could give you the word in a few simple sentences:
