Cartoning machine / Cartoner
➢ Cartoning machine is a packaging machines which form a carton board (folded & flat)
blank into a carton , fills it with a product and its information leaflet.
➢ At its infeed section three is a carton magazines that hold side-sealed carton blanks.
➢ A spring-loaded device pushes the blanks from the magazine where vacuum cups open
the blanks.
➢ Mechanical fingers position an open the blanks. After the filling with the product, the
machine closes the carton’s end flaps either by tucking it in or by applying adhesives
thereby completely sealing the carton.
,Usually there are two types of cartooning machines
➢ Horizontal Cartoning Machine (HCM )
➢ Vertical Cartoning Machine (VCM)
❖ HCM
A cartoning machine which picks a single piece from stack of folded carton and erects it,
fills with a product horizontally along with the product information leaflet(PIL) through
an open end and closes by tucking the end flaps of the carton or applying glue /
adhesive.
❖ VCM
A cartoning machine which erects a folded carton in upright position, fills with a product
or number of products vertically through an open end and closes by either tucking the
end flaps of the carton or applying glue / adhesive, is called a top end cartoning machine
or Vertical Cartoning Machine (VCM)
,Horizontal Cartoning Machine
❖ A Cartoning machine which erects a folded and side seamed carton and places it on a
horizontal mechanism, so that the carton can be filled with product moving horizontally through an
open end flap of the carton before being closed.

❖ Vertical Cartoning Machine
A cartoning machine which erects a folded carton, closes the bottom and then fills it with a product
vertically through an open end and closes the top by either tucking the closing flaps of the carton or
applying glue or adhesive

,❖ Automatic cartoners provide a means for packaging a wide variety of pharmaceutical, cosmetic,
and consumer products. Cartoners come in two basic configurations: Horizontal cartoners, where
the product is loaded into the carton from the side and vertical cartoners , where the product is
loaded from the top. These machines are usually equipped with additional features such as
Lot/Date code printers, leaflet inserters etc..
❖ The process of cartoning begins when the 1) product enters the machine and is collated into a
predetermined pack configuration/ pack pattern. 2) The machine selects a flat carton/case, open
and positions it for product insertion. 3) The product along with the leaflet is pushed into the
carton by a pusher . 4) The carton flaps are folded and tucked in, or the product moves to a sealing
station where the carton is sealed using hot-melt adhesive.
Selection criteria for an automatic Cartoning machine
➢The size and shape of the product to be cartoned
➢The number of items to be packaged
➢The size of the carton itself
➢The required cartoning speed

, ❖ Automatic cartoning machine Consists of several parts/areas of operation like: Product collation,
Carton pick - up, Code embossing, Carton erection by knife blade, Leaflet pick – up system ,
Pusher for Product insertion, Carton closure, Discharge belt conveyor
Operation flow chart:
➢Automatic Cartoning Machine draws the carton from a magazine & opens the carton, Inserts product and
closes the carton by tucking in the flaps.
➢Carton In-feed oscillating suction pads extract the flat folded cartons from the magazine and open them.
The tension in the carton is released by breaking back the fold before the carton is pushed between the
chain carrying fingers.
➢The leaflet pick-up & place system picks up the leaflet from the leaflet magazine and places it rightly
infront of the holdr/ bucket carrying the product to be fed in the carton .
➢ Continuous motion barrel loader pusher push the product along with the leaflet (PIL) safely into the open
carton. If the carton is missing, the product will not be loaded. An overload safety feature will stop the
machine if a fault occurs during loading.
➢Flap closing: Two types of closing systems are provided, a tuck in system, and a glue application system.
➢Discharge belts carry the final/completed pack safely out of the machine.
Prefolded Leaflet (Booklet) insertion: An automatic insertion of pre-folded leaflets /booklet is also possible
with a booklet insertion device.
Automatic Cartoning Machine is suitable for packaging of items such as tubes, blister strips, bottles,
vials, ampoules, droppers, inhalers, bearings, soaps and many other products falling within the wide
range of the machine either individually or in combination.
