PERCOLATION
• Per – through
• Colation –strain
• The substance which we get through strain is called percolation
• Menstrum : it is solvent like Water, ethanol, ether , ketone, alcohol etc
• Substances which we get through strain by adding menstruum
• 5 types :
• communication of drug
• imbihition of drug
• Packing
• Maceration
• Percolation
• communication of drug
• A crude drug which is extracted from plant washed , dried & divided into smaller
particles is communication of drug
• IMBIHITION OF DRUG
• Take a container & add the crude drug particles .then add menstruum ( solvent) till the
level of crude drug particles
• This beaker is completely covered & keep it a side for 24 hours
• Drug particles absorb the menstruum & become swollen
• Packing
• Leave some of the place at the end of percolation
Keep filter paper
• Keep layer of cotton
• Add swollen drug particles
• Again keep a layer cotton
Maceration
• Add pure menstrum
• Close it completely
• Leave it for 10-12 hrs
• ( time based upon solvent & crude drug)

• After leaving it for 10-12 hrs
• Extracted menstrum will be filled at the end at percolator
• Open the tap of percoltar & let the extract fill into the breaker
• How much amount of extract is filled that much of menstrum
( solvent) is again added at the top of percolator
Continue the process till colour of extract change ex (red –pink)
Percolation takes place in 2 types
• Hot percolation process (or ) soxholation:
• The menstruum which is added should be hot
• Reverse percolation process :
• Extracted menstruum is again added to the percolator
