Megan Middleton Understanding the role of supportive relationships Unit 11 P6, M3, D2

P6- Explain the role of supportive relationships in reducing the risk of abuse and neglect.

M3- Discuss the role of supportive relationships in reducing the risk of abuse and neglect, using
examples.

Core Principles of care;

The core principles of care are to:

 Foster equality and diversity of people
 Foster people’s rights and responsibilities
 Maintain confidentiality of information

These principles are known as the core principles of care and should set the standards that service
providers to abide by. Vulnerable people, along with other individuals, should expect to be treated
with;

 Dignity and respect
 Equality, in regards to the quality of care provided, but differently, in terms of the quantity
of care, depending on their individual needs
 Fairness, in terms of their rights and responsibilities, regardless of the support they need
 Privacy, in terms of confidentiality and having their own private space

This is to reduce the risk of abuse within the care setting as all staff members must follow the above
requirements. A disciplinary may be given out if they are not followed as well as further
investigation.

Building effective relationships;

Adult at the centre of planning

A professional relationship can differ from personal friendships as professionals have framework of
values to go by, they also have a duty of care for other individuals as well as them needing to
establish boundaries that should not be crossed. However, the relationship should consist of support
and empowerment as the individual is in a position where help is needed and the professional is in a
helping role. A person-centred approach is now encouraged in professions as it places the vulnerable
adults is at the centre of the care. But this was not always the case as women were sterilised in the
1970’s without giving consent, this was to stop them having what they called ‘unwanted babies’.
This was carried out against the women’s will, therefore meant that the patient was not at the
centre of their care. This could have caused them to feel betrayed by health care professionals
leading them to be less likely to trust a health or social care setting again. It could also have caused
some psychological problems as they would have had their baby taken away from them without
their consent, meaning that they will be grieving for their child because of a decision made be by a
health care ‘professional’, and the best interest of the patient were not considered. This kind of
thing will not reoccur as the patient is the centre of their planning, meaning that the risk of abuse
will be reduced and stopped.

Methods of communication and listening

Non-verbal communication may be the only option for some people, this may be due to them being
deaf, they will need a signer and interpreter because of this for them to successfully communicate
with others. Or Makaton may be used if the individual has learning and communication issues. This
reduces the risk of abuse as both the patient and care giver have a way of communicating, this will
