M1- Assess the likely immediate effects of two different forms of abuse on the health and social
wellbeing of adults.
D1- Evaluate the potential long term effects of these two types of abuse on the health and
wellbeing of adults.
Physical abuse
Physical abuse is intentional by the abuser and unwanted by the victim. It may not always leave a
mark in the victim’s body but it is still unacceptable. Physical abuse may be things such as;
Scratching
Punching
Biting
Strangling
Kicking
Short term effects
Immediate effects of physical abuse can be treated by an emergency room physician or another
health care provider. Short term effects can range from;
Cuts
Bruises
Broken bones
Physical sickness
Black eyes
Burns
These things may cause the individual to withdraw themselves from society. They may make a lack
of eye contact and conversation when they are in a social situation. They may also appear to be
timid when they are around their abuser in a social situation. Cuts, bruises and broken bones may
lead the victim to fail to attend education or work, meaning they have to spend more time with their
partner (the abuser in this case). They may also need frequent visits to the hospital regarding a
number of different issues, this may cause alarm for the health care professionals and the victim’s
family. The individual may become withdrawn from family and friends as their abuser may refuse
them visitors, they may also not allow them to go out to do daily things such as shopping, working
etc.
Long term effects
Long term effects may cause health issues for the individual, this includes;
Arthritis
High blood pressure
Heart disease
Chronic pain syndromes
Illnesses such as diabetes may get progressively worse due to the abuser neglecting the victims
medical need. Psychological issues may develop in the victim as time goes on, this may include
anxiety and depression which will be left untreated, drug and alcohol abuse may also occur, this may
result in suicide or murder due to the abuse getting worse over time.
Sexual abuse
sexual abuse can be carried out by the victim’s spouse, family member or partner, this may occur in
a number of ways; this may include;
Sexual assault
Sexual harassment
Rape.
