M2- Discuss the factors likely to influence current and future patterns of health in the UK.
D1- Evaluate the influence of government on factors that contribute to the current patterns of
health and illness in the UK.
Exercise
The Adult Health and Lifestyle survey in 2006 found that 22% of Knowsley’s residents were obese,
and 37% were overweight. This has since increased as individuals consume a large amount of fast
food and exercising less. However, a number of females are likely to carry out exercise as they want
to achieve the desired look of a small frame. But this can result in excessive exercising and/or eating
disorders as models are viewed as ‘perfect’ so some women may go to extremes to achieve the look.
Older individuals may spend their time on their job and family, this leaves less time for them to carry
out exercise, meaning that they get little exercise throughout the week. Individuals with more spare
time may become inspired and encouraged to exercise when they see the Olympics, this is likely as
they will see athletes become successful in sports. The Change 4 Life also focuses on exercise as well
as food, they offer support and ideas for parents to encourage their children to take part in sports
and eat well. This campaign has helped over 2million people make a change to their lifestyle.
Diet
An individual’s diet can influence their health, an example of this would be that 19% of children in
the UK are obese as the number of fast food consumed has risen, it is thought that these children
come from low income families. This will lead to diabetes or high blood pressure, this can lead to
death if the indivudlas lifestyle does not improve. To amend this issue, the government have
requested that all school’s remove all unhealthy foods from the student’s diets, this is due to Jamie
Oliver discovering that the ‘turkey twizzler’ only consisted of 34% turkey, the rest was fat, water and
additives. Change 4 Life is a campaign that has been advertised throughout schools, this is to
promote healthy eating and exercise, it involves the whole family so the audience is varied. The
campaign offers many medias including;
Booklets
Websites
Phone apps
This is due to the large number of people using technology. But some children may tend to do the
opposite of what they see in the media, this is where the child’s parent(s) or carer should step
forward to encourage the child to try new things and improve their life. The child and the parent
may make changes to their diet together, this will improve their life and help them to bond more.
Age
The current life expectancy in the United Kingdom is around 80 years old. There are around 65
million people in the UK, 20 million of these individuals are around 50 years of age and over. This
increased life expectancy leads to an increased number of people suffering from disorders and
diseases. In present day, we have a good understanding of what disorders and diseases affect ageing
individuals, we are also aware of how to prevent and treat certain health issues regarding age.
However, dementia is the main cause of death in the UK, it is a disease that progresses and is hard to
maintain. Due to this, there is a strain on the National Health Service and social services as they need
to be able to provide more care and support for individuals suffering from dementia. These services
become more urgent as the dementia progresses. The government have set up a dementia
campaign, this is to remove any stigma that may come with having dementia, as well as helping to
identify early symptoms of dementia. The campaign consists of short films where people share their
