M3- Assess the different methods that can be used for promoting and protecting public health.
Many different methods can be used to promote and protect public health. These are needed as
young people may adopt unhealthy choices, which may have a long-term effect. Health promotion
programmes are aimed at children, young people and their parents, the aim is to help promote a
healthier lifestyle for all family members, with the hope that the choices will be taken into adulthood
by the child. I will assess the methods in relation to ‘Healthy Child’ section of the Children’s National
Service Framework.
The level of research into health promotion in many areas is insufficient, this means that not enough
children and young people are made aware of any bad health choices they may be making. Health
schemes are not detailed enough, as well as them not reaching the targeted audience. This is due to
them not being advertised on things such as TV or social media (where children spend a large
amount of time). There are a number of schemes that are aimed at children, young people and their
parents, these include;
Healthy eating
Road safety
Mental health
Parent support group
A large amount of these schemes will be successful, but a large percentage of children and young
people spend their time on social media or playing video games. This means that any schemes that
are not advertised in these medias will not be brought to the target audiences attention. This makes
the scheme less effective. To amend this, promotions are now made available on social media as
many individuals now use lap tops, mobile phones and TV. But the target audience may not pay
attention to these schemes, this is when the individuals parents or elders need to advise the
individual on what is best, hoping that the induvial will improve their health-behaviours and carry
them into adulthood. This not only means that the child, young person and their parent(s) will lead a
better lifestyle, but they will also have a stronger bond between the two individuals.
Health can be promoted through supermarkets too, an example of this may be the ‘Change 4 Life’
campaign. This engages children as there are apps for tablets or mobile phones, as well as
games/booklets for children and young people to enjoy. This campaign’s aim is to reduce obesity in
children throughout the UK. In addition to this, the NHS spent around £90,000 on 7 celebrities to
promote various health programmes. One being Melinda Messenger, who posed with her daughter
to promote the £500,000 Five-A-Day fruit and veg campaign. This will reach out to both parents and
children, leading more people to consume fruit and vegetables, either in the meals or as a snack.
D2- Evaluate the effectiveness of methods used to promote and protect public health for the two
names diseases.
I will be evaluating the effectiveness of the methods used to prevent and control communicable and
non-communicable diseases in this part of my assignment, this will include discussing the strengths
and weaknesses of each disease.
Communicable – Meningitis
There are a number of vaccinations used to prevent meningitis, these are;
MMR vaccine
Meningitis C vaccine
5-in-1 Vaccine
Meningitis B vaccine
The pneumococcal vaccine
Benefits outweigh the risks with vaccinations, although there are side effects, these include;
