P4- Explain roles and responsibilities of health and social care workers in improving health and
quality of life for people with dementia.

M2- Discuss the role of teamwork in improving the health and quality of life for people with
dementia.

D1- Evaluate how different approaches to caring for people with dementia can affect individual
outcomes

Definition of health and wellbeing

To have health means ‘being free from illness or injury’, being in sound body and mind can also mean
to have good health. ‘Well-being means to be in a state of being comfortable, health, or happy’. This
is made up of four factors

 Physical
 Intellectual
 Emotional
 Social

Each of the above are needs that must be must be fulfilled in order for the individual to have good
well-being. The carer should take each of those factors into consideration.

Roles and responsibilities

The holistic approach sees everyone as an individual, instead of labelling them to their illness or
disability. Holistic care reflects the individual along with their unique interests, needs, preferences
and hobbies. This is instead of them being cared for in a way that only meets the needs of their
illness.

General Practitioner

GP can give an individual suffering from dementia a large amount of support and information, this
includes;

 Support with care planning for the future
 Medical advice and treatment
 Referrals to specialist help and other services
 Continuity of care (the GP will remain a key contact point for the person with dementia and
those around them as the dementia progresses)

The GP may give the patient medical treatment such as;

 Donepezil
 Rivastigmine
 Galantamine
 Memantine

Each of these medicines treat each form of Alzheimer’s and dementia. They cover the illness from
mild to severe as donepezil treats individuals who are on palliative care, whereas Galantamine treats
mild to moderate memory impairments. Each of these tablets will slow down the progression of the
illness, this will help the patient deal with their condition better.
