M1- Assess possible effects of different types of dementia on individuals and their families
The individual suffering from dementia will forget messages or events that have happened recently,
these things would normally be remembered as it was a recent event. The individual may experience
anxiety and stress due to forgetting this information, which can interfere with everyday life. A sense
of place and time may also be lost, these things can cause stress and anxiety in social situations. The
individual’s personality and behaviour may also change; this begins as a subtle situation which will
then progress. Depression and a loss of confidence may be experienced due to this. Language may
also deteriorate as they may be unable to find the correct words when communicating with others.
Vision also decreases, these factors can cause the individual to feel excluded from social situations
as it will be difficult to interact with others. A sense of guilt may be experienced by the individual’s
family, this may be due to how the individual with dementia was treated in the past, or they may
feel a sense of embarrassment due to the patient’s unusual behaviour. Guilt may also be felt if the
patient’s family feels as if they do not want to care for the dementia patient, they may also lose their
temper due to the individual becoming difficult to handle. A feeling of distress or annoyance may
also be experienced by the family as they need to adapt to their family members constant changing
behaviour. The illness should be explained to any younger members of the family in order for them
to understand what is going on. Teenagers must also be reminded that they do not need to take on
any extra responsibilities around the house and they should focus on doing well in their education. It
must also be explained that the disease cannot be caught and it must be made clear that any extra
support is available if it is needed.
Living arrangements for the individual suffering from dementia may change as they may need to
move in with family, this can lead to a loss of independence as they may get clothes washed and
meals cooked for them. It may also come to the time when the individual can no longer carry on
working, meaning that they will not have their own money. They may also be taken advantage of
when it comes to someone else taking charge of their finances. All of this may have an impact on
their physical health, as well as the progressing dementia. Friends and family may no longer be
recognised by the individual, causing distress for the individual. A loss of mobility may also arise,
causing the individual to lose the ability to walk, talk, eat etc. Each of these things will cause them to
deteriorate, having an effect on their personal care in which they may not have a say in. This can
cause further issues regarding mental health.
