The Pearl Study Guide, Questions and answers, latest update. VERIFIED. (Chapter 1) What, in general, happens in the first chapter? - -Steinbeck introduces the reader to Kino and his family. We learn about his simple way of life. Coyotito is stung by a scorpion, and the family goes to the doctor seeking help. The doctor refuses because Kino is both poor and of a different race than the doctor. This shows the discrimination that is present in the story. (Chapter 1) Notice that the townspeople follow Kino. When does it first appear? - -It is a song that plays when something bad is going to happen to Kino and his family. It's like an omen to the reader. It first appears when the scorpion crawls down the rope on Coyotito's
