Endocrine System and Disorders
Nursing Study Notes
Overview of Anatomy and Physiology
Functions
1. Growth and metabolism of various tissues that help in body mechanism regulation
such as body temperature and normal mental functions
2. Immune system control by regulating the production and functions of immune cells
3. Reproduction control by regulating the development and the functions of the male and
female reproductive system
4. Uterine contractions and release of milk from lactating mothers
5. Blood sugars levels control and other nutrients in the blood
6. Balance of acid-base, fluid, and electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and calcium
concentrations in the blood.
7. Response to injury and stress
8. Maintenance and regulation of vital functions such as heart rate and blood pressure.

,Hypothalamus
Hypothalamus activates, controls, and integrates the peripheral autonomic nervous
system, endocrine processes, and somatic functions such as body temperature, sleep,
and appetite.
Pituitary Gland
The pituitary gland promotes the growth of body tissue, influences water absorption by the
kidney, and controls sexual development and function.

, Adrenal Gland
Regulates sodium and electrolyte balance; influences water absorption by the kidney;
controls sexual development and function.
The adrenal cortex produces corticosteroids (mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids, and sex
hormones.
The adrenal medulla produces catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinephrine) into the
bloodstream.
