Communication networks and protocols
Practice Quiz
Exercise 1: (12 pts)
One of a company's branches uses the address 10.0.0.0. Consider four machines in this facility, whose host
names (with domain) and addresses are given below:
Host_Name @ IP @ Mac
Omar_Entreprise.com 10.99.43.27 MAC_1
Katia_Entreprise.com 10.163.12.254 MAC_2
Leila_ Entreprise.com 10.189.12.27 MAC_3
Amine_Entreprise.com 10.126.43.254 MAC_4
1. How many bits are used to represent the network portion?
2. What is the number of bits used to create two sub-networks such that Omar and Amine belong to the
same sub-network and Katia and Leila to another sub-network?
3. Propose a mask so that no two machines belong to the same subnet. Propose a division (in a table) into
subnetworks, also giving the broadcast address and address range for each proposed subnetwork.
, 4. Draw the connection diagram for the 4 subnetworks proposed in question 3 using router R1, specifying
the router interface addresses and the machine addresses on the diagram.
5. Is it necessary to configure routing on R1 to enable the 4 subnetworks proposed in the 3 question to
communicate?
Note: R1 router interfaces (eth0, eth1, eth2, eth3) will have the last address in each subnet.
Exercise 2: (08 pts)
1. Will Web servers hosted by ISPs need to use NAT to send/receive data from customers?
2. How can a single DHCP server serve two different networks?
3. Can a DHCP server obtain its IP address from another DHCP server?
4. Indicate the meaning of each of the following TCP header flags: PSH= 1, SYN=1, URG=1, RST= 1.
